Hansmann cited for two product liability defense successes

In Missouri Lawyers Weekly's recently released 2014 "Corporate Counsel Desk Book," Brown & James' attorney Brad Hansmann was cited for the two best product liability defense successes of the year for a manufacturer.

In Hopfer v. Neenah, a St. Louis jury determined that a man who was paralyzed in a car accident in 2009, in which his truck hit a drainage grate, was not entitled to damages from the manufacturer of that grate, Neenah Foundry Company. The plaintiff's trial demand was for $24.6 million, however, the final demand was at $17.5 million.

The other case, Dejana et al. vs. Marine Technology Inc. et al., involved a boat racing accident in which two men who were operating the boat die when the boat flipped during a race. A federal jury in St. Louis found no fault on the part of the boat manufacturer who the plaintiff alleged was liable, saying that the boat in question had a defective canopy over the cockpit, and the cockpit failed in the accident. The plaintiffs had asked for a combined $16.2 million for the losses of the two men involved.
